OUR STORY

ISEJ is a Zimbabwe-registered not-for-profit institute working at the intersection of law, public policy, and public health to advance sustainable empowerment and justice.We hold the position that law is not only a system to be complied with but a narrative, one that assigns authority to some as knowers and interpreters, and silences others.

ISEJ exists to close that gap: equipping community-based organisations, activists, and marginalised communities with the legal literacy, policy fluency, and narrative confidence to interpret and contribute to the laws, policies and systems that govern their lives.

Our work is grounded in the understanding that gender justice, climate justice, and sustainable livelihoods are deeply interconnected. Advancing the rights and safety of women and girls means simultaneously addressing environmental vulnerability, economic exclusion, and health inequity. We integrate these dimensions into every aspect of our research, advocacy, and training. Our work is delivered through three areas of expertise held across our core team: applied legal research and training, public policy and economic analysis, and public health and advocacy.

Across all pillars ISEJ has a dedicated focus on HIV key populations, youth engagement, gender equality, climate justice, rapid humanitarian assistance during times of natural and manmade disasters and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.
